Even if he's defeated, Schroder is a winner

On an election night that produced no clear winner, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder provided an uncanny facsimile of one, bounding to the stage to raucous applause, his hands clasped above his head in victory.
It was a breathtaking display of moxie by a politician whose governing coalition had just been voted out of power.
Yet Schröder won, if not a numerical victory, than an enormous victory in expectations. Last May, when the chancellor expectedly called an early election, his Social Democratic Party trailed the opposition Christian Democrats by 17 percentage points in polls.
